You receive error messages when you try to create a domain GPO or edit an existing domain GPO in a Windows Server 2008 Active Directory domain environment

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. In a Windows Server 2008 Active Directory domain environment, you install the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) of the File Services role. Then, you create a file screen for any folder on the system drive, such as a new folder named "%SystemDrive%\temp". In this scenario, when you try to create a domain Group Policy Object (GPO), the operation fails. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
The data present in the reparse point buffer is invalid.
This issue also occurs when you try to edit an existing domain GPO. When you try to save the change that you made to the GPO, you receive the following error message:
The Group Policy snapin was unable to save your changes due to the following error:
The data present in the reparse point buffer is invalid.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes

The .manifest files and the .mum files that are installed in each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. These files and their associated .cat (security catalog) files are important for maintaining the state of the updated component. The .cat files are signed with a Microsoft digital signature. The attributes of these security files are not listed.
