Single sign-on for 802.1X authentication disables all non-SSO credential providers in Windows Vista and in Windows Server 2008

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

On a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, assume that you enable the single sign-on (SSO) service for 802.1X authentication. In this scenario, all the other non-SSO credential providers are disabled. Therefore, you may be unable to authenticate by using some credential providers that are provided by Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), such as fingerprint authentication.

Cause

When SSO is enabled in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008, the Layer 2 Network Access (L2NA) logon filter disables all non-SSO providers.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, apply the following hotfix. After you do this, the operating system disables only the user name/password providers or smart-card credential providers that are built-in credential providers.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

  • The files that apply to a specific product and milestone (RTM, SPn) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:
    VersionProductMilestoneService branch
    6.0.600 0 . 20 xxx Windows RTM LDR
    6.0.600 1 . 22 xxx Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 SP1 SP1 LDR
  • Service Pack 1 is integrated into Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxxx version number.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately . MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files (attributes not listed) are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
