Hyper-V performance counters in Windows Server 2008 are displayed incorrectly or report incorrect data when you remotely query the counters from a Windows Server 2003-based computer

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When you use the performance monitor on a Windows Server 2003-based computer to query Hyper-V related performance counters on a Windows Server 2008-based computer that has the Hyper-V role enabled, the following problems occur.

Problem 1

The following objects are missing:
  • Hyper-V Hypervisor Partition
  • Hyper-V Hypervisor Virtual Processor
  • Hyper-V Legacy Network Adapter
  • Hyper-V Virtual IDE controller
  • Hyper-V Virtual Storage Device
  • Hyper-V WM IO APIC
  • Hyper-V VM Remoting
  • Hyper-V VM Save, Snapshot, and Restore
  • Hyper-V VM Vid Driver
  • Hyper-V VM Vid Message Queue
  • Hyper-V VM Vid Numa Node
  • Hyper-V VM Vid Partition
  • Hyper-V VM Worker Process Memory Management

Problem 2

Under the Hyper-V Hypervisor Logical Processor object, the following issues occur:
  • The %C1 Time counter and the %C2 Time counter do not report correct data.
  • Nine "0" items exist after the %C2 Time counter.
  • The following counters are missing:
    • %C3 Time
    • %Guest Run Time
    • %Hypervisor Run Time
    • %Idle Time
    • %Total Run Time
    • C3 Transitions/sec
    • Total Interrupts/sec
  • The following counters do not exist in the performance monitor on the Windows Server 2008-based computer, but you see them on the Windows Server 2003 machine performance monitor:
    • Context Switch Time
    • Hypervisor Run Time
    • Processor Halts/sec
    • Total Run Time

Problem 3

Under the Hyper-V Hypervisor Root Virtual Processor object, the following issues occur:
  • Twenty-five "0" items are listed as counters before the real counters begin in the list.
  • The following counters are missing:
    • %Guest Run Time
    • %Hypervisor Run Time
    • %Total Run Time
  • The following counters do not exist in the performance monitor on the Windows Server 2008-based computer, but you see them on the Windows Server 2003 machine performance monitor:
    • Hypervisor Run Time
    • Total Run Time

Cause

The way performance monitor determines base counters is incorrect, which causes dependent counters not to show up.

Note If the provider is not running on Windows Server 2008, you will not see the performance object on the remote performance monitor that is running on Windows Server 2003 even though the object is displayed in the performance monitor in Windows Server 2008. This is by design.

For example, the "Hyper-V Virtual Storage Device" object shows up in the performance monitor in Windows Server 2008. However, when you select the counters, they aren't added. This is because a SCSI Controller is not installed with a disk. Therefore, the counters do not show up on the remote computer that is running Windows Server 2003.
