The Full Text Search component installation fails when you try to install the SQL Server 2008 database engine from an installation DVD on a computer that has SQL Server 2008 Express edition installed

Symptoms

You have Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express edition installed on a computer. Then, you try to install the SQL Server database engine from an installation DVD. The SQL Server database engine is in one of the following editions of SQL Server 2008:
  • SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition
  • SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition
  • SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition
In the "Setup process complete" stage of the installation, the Full Text Search component is marked as Failed. Additionally, error messages that resemble the following are logged in the Sql_engine_core_shared_Cpu32_1.log file:

MSI (s) (D8:F0) [14:02:46:720]: File: c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\COM\iftsph.dll; To be installed; Won't patch; No existing file.

Note By default, the Sql_engine_core_shared_Cpu32_1.log file is located in the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\Installation Date ("YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS" format)\

Resolution

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Copy all installation files of SQL Server 2008 from the installation DVD to the local hard disk.

  2. Start and then run the Setup program from the local hard disk.
