Error message when printing a report from Microsoft FRx WebPort: "Kernel Mode Printer Blocking Policy is Enabled. The Attempt for BCL EasyPDF to Use a Kernel Mode Driver Failed."


Symptoms

"Kernel Mode printer blocking policy is enabled. The attempt for BCL easyPDF to use a Kernel Mode driver failed. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp"This error is received in when trying to install BCL easyPDF driver on a Windows XP or Windows 2003. It will be visible in the Windows Event Viewer.

Cause

In Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition and Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, installation of kernel-mode drivers is blocked by default. In Windows XP Professional, installation of kernel-mode drivers is not blocked by default.

Resolution

1. Open Group Policy, to edit the local Group Policy object by:
a. Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar
b. Click Run
c. Type 'gpedit.msc'
d. Press ENTER
The Group Policy screen will appear.
2. Under Local Computer Policy, expand (double-click) Computer Configuration
3. Expand (double-click) Administrative Templates
4. Expand (double-click) Printers
5. On the right side of the screen, right-click on 'Disallow installation of printers using kernel mode drivers' setting, and then click properties
6. On the Settings tab, click Disabled, and then click OK.

More Information

1. You must click 'Enabled' to block the installation of kernel-mode printer drivers.
2. Clicking 'Not Configured' or 'Disabled' allows kernel-mode printer drivers to be installed.
3. In some cases you will need to click on 'Disabled' to allow as the 'Not Configured' prevents the installation of kernel-mode printer drivers (this only occurs in some environments).
