You may encounter several smart card failure problems after you raise the domain functional level to Windows Server 2008 R2 domain function level in a network environment

Symptoms

In the network environment, after you raise the domain functional level to Windows Server 2008 R2 domain function level, you may encounter the following smart card failure problems:
  • All Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 clients may be unable to log on to the domain by using the smart card.
  • Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows 7 Beta clients may be unable to log on to the domain by using the smart card if the resource domain does not trust the root certification authority (CA).
  • The smart card referral process may fail if the resource domain does not trust the root CA.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, install the following hotfix on a Windows 7 Beta-based domain controller.
