You cannot upgrade Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2008 R2 or to Windows Server 2012

Symptoms

When you upgrade Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2008 R2, you receive the following error message:
These Windows features might not work properly after the upgrade. We recommend turning off features before upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel and search for "turn Windows features on or off".

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

When you upgrade Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2012, you receive the following error message:
Windows won’t install unless each of these things is taken care of. Close Windows Setup, take care of each one, and then restart Windows Setup to continue.

Windows needs to be restarted so necessary changes to system files can be made before continuing.

Make these changes:

Turn off these Windows features.

Cause

This issue occurs because the release versions of Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and of Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 are not supported on Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012.

Resolution

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 has to be upgraded to Service Pack 2 before Windows Server 2008 can be upgraded to Windows Server 2008 R2 or to Windows Server 2012. Starting with Service Pack 2, Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 is supported on Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012. To install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012, go to one of the following Microsoft Download Center websites:
