The first offline file sync operation fails when you pin an entry and then work offline on a client computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You have a client computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. You pin an entry on this computer, and then work offline. The pinned entry on the server side is modified. After the client computer works offline, the first offline file sync operation may fail without an error message. In this scenario, the offline file is not filled, and you cannot access the file correctly.

Note The second file sync will succeed.

Cause

This problem occurs because, in Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, the Client-Side Caching (CSC) engine syncs a file in two phases:
  • The prepare sync phase
  • The actual sync phase
If the information that is collected in the first phase differs from the information that is collected in the second phase, the file sync operations may fail. Therefore, if a file that is ghosted in the prepare sync phase is un-ghosted as part of the actual sync phase, the file information is changed, and the sync fails.
