System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2 Client Status Reporting fails when clients have multiple discovery records

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2 and Client Status Reporting are installed on a multitier hierarchy.
  • A SCCM 2007 R2 client is assigned to a tier 2 site, and it sends a heartbeat discovery data record (DDR).
  • This SCCM 2007 R2 client is then assigned to a tier 1 site, and it sends a heartbeat discovery data record (DDR).
  • You run the Client Status Reporting tool and configure it to use Run Now.
In this scenario, the Client Status Reporting fails, and you receive the following error message when you try to update the summary information:
Invalid SQL error - Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.

The statement has been terminated.

Cause

The CH_SyncClientSummary Client Status Reporting stored procedure assumes that only one heartbeat value is returned. However, two heartbeat values are returned in this scenario. Therefore, the Client Status Reporting fails with the error message.
