Error message when you run a Borland MS-DOS based application: "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running"

In Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, when you run a Borland MS-DOS based application that uses the "Copyright (C) Rational Systems Inc." signature in the extended header (rational extended header), you may receive the following error message:

This problem occurs because, when the system loads the application, the system checks for the string "Copyright (C) Rational Systems Inc." in the application's headers. There is an error in the calculation of offset in the headers when the system looks for this string. Then, the system compares against data at the wrong offset. Because the comparison is performed with incorrect data, the string comparison fails. Therefore, the correct application compatibility behavior is not given for these applications and the application crashes.
