FIX: When you undock some windows or change the window layout in the Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 IDE, the IDE crashes


Symptoms

When you undock some windows or change the window layout in the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) IDE, you may experience one or more of the following problems.

Scenario 1

Consider the following scenario:
  • You debug an application in the Visual Studio 2008 SP1 IDE.
  • When you hit a breakpoint, you undock the Watch window or the CallStack window.
  • You continue to debug, and then you enter the next statement.
  • Then, you click Stop Debugging.
In this scenario, the IDE crashes.

Scenario 2

Consider the following scenario:
  • You undock some windows in the Visual Studio 2008 SP1 IDE.

  • You redock the windows to other locations.
  • You switch the window layout between full-screen mode and other modes.
In this scenario, the IDE crashes.

This problem occurs because of an issue inside the Visual Studio shell engine.
