In Windows Server 2003, an Office 2003 document that contains ASCII words enclosed in non-ASCII quotation marks is not searchable in the Indexing service if you search files by using the word immediately after the first quotation mark

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • Hotfix 915800 is installed on a Windows Server 2003-based computer.
  • On this computer, you have a Microsoft Office 2003 document in English. In this document, some ASCII words are enclosed in non-ASCII single quotation marks (� �) or double quotation marks (� �).
  • This document is indexed by the Indexing service or by other search providers that rely on Office iFilter.
In this scenario, the document is not searchable if you search files by using the word immediately after the first single quotation mark or immediately after the first double quotation mark.

For example, a Microsoft Office Word 2003 document in English contains the following words:
  • �User name� (Two words are enclosed in Chinese double quotation marks.)
  • �Computer name� (Two words are enclosed in Chinese single quotation marks.)
If you search files by using the keyword "User" or "Computer," the Indexing service returns no result.

Note In this same scenario, if you search files by using the keyword "name," the document is returned.

Resolution

Hotfix information

Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
