The smart card personal identification number (PIN) dialog box does not appear in the foreground of the desktop when you enroll a smart card certificate in Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2008

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

On a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2008, you try to enroll a smart card certificate from a certification authority (CA) in Internet Explorer. At the end of the certificate Web enrollment process, you expect the smart card personal identification number (PIN) dialog box to appear in the foreground of the desktop for you to enter the PIN code. However, you do not see the dialog box. Instead, an icon blinks in the taskbar. If you click the icon in the taskbar, the dialog box appears in the foreground.

Notes
  • If you do not have a smart card in the smart card reader, or if the smart card is not writable, a please insert smartcard dialog box is minimized in the taskbar.
  • This issue does not occur in the RTM version of Windows Vista.
