On a Windows Server 2003-based computer, the !heap command does not work when you debug a 32-bit process that runs in a 64-bit operating system

Consider the following scenario:

• You run a debugging tool on a Windows Server 2003-based computer.
• You debug a 32-bit process that runs in a 64-bit operating system. For example, you debug a user dump file of a 32-bit process that runs in a 64-bit operating system.
• You use public symbols when you debug the process.
• You use the !heap command to view the heap usage information.

In this scenario, the !heap command does not work and returns an error message.

An example of the output when this issue occurs is as follows:

In Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), the public symbols for the Windows-32-on-Windows-64 (WOW64) version of the Ntdll.dll file are missing some additional debugging information. This additional debugging information is required for the !heap command in the WinDbg tool to work.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, the computer must run one of the following operating systems:

• The x64-based version of Windows XP

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time.
