The print options that you specify in an application may be ignored in the print output when you print a document from a client computer that runs an x64 version of Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You print a document from a client computer that runs an x64 version of Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • You print to a shared printer that is hosted on a print server that runs an x64 version of Windows Server 2003.
  • Print rendering occurs on the server side.
  • You applied some print options in the application that prints the document.
In this scenario, the print options that you specified may be ignored in the print output. This usually occurs when you print documents in Microsoft Office applications, such as Microsoft Office Word or Microsoft Office PowerPoint. However, this problem may occur in any application that uses the ResetDC function to set the preferences for a print job.

Note The problem does not occur in any of the following scenarios:
  • You print from a client computer that runs a 32-bit version of Windows Vista to a print server that runs a 32-bit version of Windows Server 2003.
  • You print from a client computer that runs an x64 version of Windows Server 2003 to a print server that runs an x64 version of Windows Vista.
  • Print rendering occurs on the client side instead of on the server side.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, apply this hotfix on the client computer.

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the �Hotfix Request� page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.

More information

Print rendering may occur either on the client or on the print server, depending on your actual configuration. You can check whether a print job is rendered on the client side or on the server side by pausing the print queue and checking the properties of the print job. If the data type of the print job is EMF, print rendering occurs on the server side. If the data type is RAW, print rendering occurs on the client side.
