Applications or services that use the NFS redirector may crash when a Linux-based client or a UNIX-based client disconnects from a Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 terminal server without logging off

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • From a Linux-based computer or from a UNIX-based computer, you use a third-party Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) client to connect to a Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 terminal server.
  • In the Terminal Services session, you map network drives to the Linux-based computer or to the UNIX-based computer by using Network File System (NFS).
  • When an application is running in the session, you disconnect from the terminal server without logging off.
In this scenario, applications or services that use the NFS redirector on the Windows Server 2003 terminal server may crash. For example, the Net.exe utility and the Pddm.exe utility use the NFS redirector. If you use an application to monitor the problematic server, the application may also crash.

When this problem occurs, you have to restart the terminal server to restore the connection to the Linux-based computer or to the UNIX-based computer.

Cause

This problem occurs because a deadlock occurs in NFS after the client connection to the terminal server is reset.
