There is an issue in the memory allocation logic of the Itanium-based version of Windows Server 2008. When the system allocates memory pages, it incorrectly allocates noncontiguous physical memory instead of contiguous physical memory. This behavior may cause unpredictable issues on certain hardware at a very early stage of system startup.
This issue was discovered during tests in which the Driver Verifier utility was enabled. However, this issue may also occur when the following conditions are true:
