The FQDN option does not appear in the Subject name format list in the Certificate Templates console

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

On a Windows Server 2008-based computer, you try to duplicate a template in the Certificate Templates console. In this scenario, you may want to select the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) as the Subject name format. However, no such option appears in the Certificate Templates console. Currently, the options are limited to Common Name, Distinguished Name, and None.

More information

Some third-party Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) applications cannot connect to a Domain Controller by using LDAP together with the default version 2 Domain Controller Authentication template because the empty subject name is not recognized. Therefore, the option FQDN is needed.

This hotfix adds an option to the Certificate Templates Console (Certtmpl.msc). After you install this hotfix, when you try to duplicate a template, the Subject name format list in the Subject Name tab is extended and has the following options:
  • Common Name
  • DNS Name
  • Fully Distinguished Name
  • None
This hotfix adds the DNS Name option.
