Symptom

When the installation of ISA Configuration Storage Server fails, error 0x80072020 is logged during the setup.

ESENT event 491 may also be logged in the Application log of the server with the following description:

Directory (5404) An attempt to determine the minimum I/O block size for the volume "C:\" containing "C:\Program Files\Microsoft ISA Server\ADAMData\adamntds.dit" failed with system error 5 (0x00000005): "Access is denied. "

The operation will fail with error -1032 (0xfffffbf8).

Cause

As part of the ISA CSS setup, a service account is used to install the ADAM instance that Configuration Storage Server uses (ISASTGCTRL). During the setup, dsamain.exe calls the GetFreeDiskSpace function to determine the available disk space on the install partition CSS is being installed on.

The service account used must have at least Read permissions on the partition to be able to call GetFreeDiskSpace.

By default the Everyone group has Read permission on all newly created partitions.

If this has been removed from the partition you're trying to install the ISA Configuration Storage Server on, the ADAM setup will fail and the installation of ISA Configuration Storage Server will fail also.

Resolution

To complete the setup, the specific ADAM service account or the Everyone group can be temporarily assigned Read permissions on the install partition. Once the CSS setup has completed, the permission for the Everyone group can be removed again if required.

More information

Steps to Reproduce:

Remove the Everyone group's permissions from the install partition and attempt to install the ISA Configuration Storage Server or ADAM on it which will fail with a 0x80072020 error.

More Information:

To verify this is the problem you're seeing, run the Sysinternals tools Procmon.exe and filter for dsamain.exe as the process. You should see an 'Access Denied' error being logged in the Procmon logs while attempt to query for free disk space on the install partition when the error appears during the CSS setup.

Running cacls <root of install partition> should confirm that the default ACL's on the install partition have been modified and the Everyone group has been removed.
