The Printer Spooler service may encounter an access violation and crash when the service handles asynchronous notifications from print clients on Windows Server 2008-based or Windows Vista Service Pack 1-based computers

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • One or more printers are shared on a Windows Server 2008-based or Windows Vista Service Pack 1-based computer.
  • To print jobs, some printer clients connect to the printers that are shared.
In this scenario, the Printer Spooler service may encounter an access violation, and then the Printer Spooler service crashes. Additionally, the following event error is logged in the Application log:

Cause

This problem occurs because the Printer Spooler service does not handle the remote procedure call (RPC) context handle type correctly.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
