Some unrecoverable hardware errors are not reported as expected on a computer that runs a 32-bit version of Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that runs a 32-bit version of Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • You enable the Machine Check Architecture (MCA) feature on the computer.
In this scenario, you expect to receive an error report when the processor detects an unrecoverable hardware error. However, some unrecoverable hardware errors are not reported as expected. Therefore, these hardware errors may remain undetected and may cause unpredictable behavior.

Cause

This problem occurs because the 32-bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 do not initialize the bank 0 control register.

Resolution

Hotfix information

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the �Hotfix Request� page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites
