More Information

The following Windows Server system software is not supported in a Hyper-V virtual machine environment:
  • Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V Role

The Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V Role cannot run recursively in a Hyper-V virtual machine. For example, a virtual machine cannot run in a virtual machine. This behavior occurs because Hyper-V requires hardware-assisted virtualization. For example, Hyper-V requires AMD virtualization (AMD-V) technology or Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) technology that is used by the parent partition. This parent partition is not available on Hyper-V virtual machines. Therefore, Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V is not supported in a Hyper-V environment.
  • Windows Server 2008 Fax Role

The Windows Server 2008 Fax Role requires access to physical hardware that is not available on a Hyper-V virtual machine. Therefore, Windows Server 2008 Fax Role is not supported in a Hyper-V environment.
  • Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 and Virtual Server 2005 R2

Microsoft Virtual Server is not supported within the Hyper-V environment because recursive machine virtualization introduces multiple levels of hardware abstraction, and multiple levels of abstraction causes decreased performance.
  • Windows Server 2003 Fax Role

The Windows Server 2003 Fax Role requires access to physical hardware that is not available in a Hyper-V virtual machine. Therefore, Windows Server 2003 Fax Role is not supported in a Hyper-V environment.
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Fax Service

The Windows 2000 Server Fax Service requires access to physical hardware that is not available in a Hyper-V virtual machine. Therefore, Windows 2000 Server Fax Service is not supported in a Hyper-V environment.
