Virtual Disk Service cannot return volume information on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista SP1

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You have an application that calls Virtual Disk Service (VDS) to query volume information on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). The length of the name of one or more volumes is larger than 50 characters. In this scenario, VDS cannot return the volume information. You may notice this problem when you run certain applications, such as the Diskpart.exe utility.

Additionally, if you have VDS debug logging enabled, the following entries are logged:
(PID:1008,TID:3480,11:29:15) INFO: ObjectMap: Wrapper added to map: 00346FFC, 0028E060
(PID:1008,TID:3480,11:29:15) ERROR: CVdsVolume::GetVolumeName: volume name is too long: VolumeName.

Cause

This problem occurs because VDS accommodates a maximum length of 50 characters for volume names.
