The Windows Image Acquisition image transfer may fail on a WSD scanner device that is installed on a Windows Vista-based or Windows Server 2008-based computer

Symptoms

On a Windows Vista-based or Windows Server 2008-based computer, you install a Web Services on Devices (WSD) scanner device that does not support event notification. On this WSD scanner, a Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) image transfer may fail.

Cause

The issue occurs because of an incompatibility between the inbox class driver and the Web Services on Devices API (WSDAPI).

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the �Hotfix Request� page. Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, the computer must run one of the following:
  • Windows Vista SP1
  • Windows Server 2008

Restart requirement

You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

If the scanner is powered on and connected to the computer where the hotfix is applied, you have to restart the computer, or you have to manually restart the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service, after you apply this hotfix. You can use one of the following methods to manually restart the WIA service.

Method 1: Use commands to restart the service
  1. Stop the WIA service (stisvc). To do this, run the net stop stisvc command in an elevated command prompt.
  2. Start the WIA service (stisvc). To do this, run the net start stisvc command in an elevated command prompt.
Method 2: Restart the service in Control Panel
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click System and Maintenance, and then click Administrative Tools.
  3. Double-click Services.
  4. Right-click Windows Image Acquisition, and then click Restart.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other previously released hotfixes.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.
