The Server for NFS component on a Windows Server 2008-based system cannot read a character translation file, and event error 1057 is logged in the System log

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows Server 2008-based system that has Server for NFS installed.
  • A character translation file was defined on the system.
In this scenario, the character file is not readable, and an event message that resembles the following is logged in the System log:

Event Type: Warning
Log Name: System
Source: NfsServer
Event ID: 1057
Task Category: None
Description:
Server for NFS could not read the character translation file <Path of the file>. Server for NFS cannot translate characters in file names. Character translation for Server for NFS will not work because the server could not read the character translation file Path of the file. Please ensure that the file exists and the path is specified correctly.

This problem occurs because the size of a dynamically allocated array is read incorrectly.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. A similar event message may be logged on a Windows Server 2008 R2 based NFS server, if the last line, in the character translation file being used, is not terminated with a new line character.
