A Windows Server 2003 SP2-based iSCSI boot server cannot generate dump files if the server uses a Storport virtual miniport as the LUN controller

Symptoms

A Windows Server 2003 SP2-based iSCSI boot server cannot generate a dump file if that server uses a Storport virtual miniport as the boot logical unit number (LUN) controller or as the system LUN controller.

Note Because dump files are not generated, it can very difficult to diagnose this issue.

Cause

In Windows Server 2003, the Storport virtual miniport is not supported to be able to generate dump files.

Resolution

A hotfix is available to resolve this issue. After you apply this hotfix, the Storport virtual miniport can be used to generate dump files.
Note: SAN changes may be required after installing this hotfix. Please contact the storage vendor support for more details on the required changes.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
