View products that this article applies to.

Introduction

You may want to free up some client access licenses (CALs) when all CALs on the Terminal Licensing Server are exhausted. You may also want to retrieve CALs for client computers that are no longer present on the network. However, you may be unable to wait until the CALs expire and are given back to the Terminal Licensing database.

This article describes the steps that you can follow to free up CALs.

Note Before you continue, verify that you have the licensing details with you. For example, you may require the Authorization/Agreement number, the License number, and the kind of agreement under which you purchased the Terminal Service CALs.

To free up Terminal Service CALs, follow these steps on the server that is running the Terminal Licensing Server:
  1. Stop the Terminal Server Licensing service.
  2. Rename the LServer folder under the following folder:
    %SystemRoot%\System32
  3. Create a new folder and name it LServer.
  4. Start the Terminal Server Licensing service.
  5. Open the Terminal Server Licensing Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in.
  6. In the console tree, right-click your terminal licensing server, and then click Install Licenses to install the CALs.
Use the following resources to find different ways that you can activate or install CALs.
