The Windows Server 2008 system may stop responding when an error occurs on one of the logical units of a storage array that is connected over a single MPIO path

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are running a Windows Server 2008-based computer.
  • The computer is connected to a storage array over a single Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO) path.

    Note This may be the only remaining good path after a failover occurs from one or more other paths.
  • I/O operations are being performed against one or more logical units on the storage array. For example, a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) operation is being performed against a logical unit.
In this scenario, the system may stop responding.

Cause

This problem occurs because the system continues to retry I/O requests to the failed logical unit and a storage path failover loop occurs.

Resolution

Hotfix information

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the �Hotfix Request� page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time.
