The Store.exe process crashes on a server that has Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 installed

Symptoms

On a Microsoft Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) server, the Store.exe process crashes intermittently. Additionally, the following events are logged in the Application log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Microsoft Exchange Server
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Description: Faulting application store.exe, version <version>, stamp <stamp>, faulting module exchmem.dll, version <version>, stamp <stamp>, debug? 0, fault address <address>.

Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7031
Description: The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 4 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action.

Cause

When the Exchange Server 2003 server processes a certain message, the server cannot allocate a lot of memory to the message. The Exchange Server 2003 server then tries to free the memory. Therefore, heap corruption occurs in the Store.exe process.

Prerequisites

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix. However, the following services are restarted automatically when you apply this hotfix:
  • The Internet Information Services (IIS) Admin service
  • The Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service
  • The Windows Management Instrumentation Service and all dependent services
