You cannot use the Windows Server Backup tool or the Wbadmin.exe command-line tool to perform a backup on a Windows Server 2008-based computer if VSS hardware providers are installed

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008.
  • Some Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) hardware providers are installed on the computer.
  • You use the Windows Server Backup tool or the Wbadmin.exe command-line tool to perform a backup on a computer.
In this scenario, the backup operation fails.

If you use the Wbadmin.exe command-line tool to perform the backup, you receive the following error message when this problem occurs:
Backup of volume VolumeLabel(X:) could not be completed. Error: The read from volume shadow copy on source failed.
Detailed Error: Invalid Function.

Cause

This problem occurs because the Windows Backup VSS Requestor incorrectly uses the VSS hardware provider instead of the VSS software provider that is provided by the system.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have Windows Server Backup Features installed.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.

  • Service Pack 1 is integrated into Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxxx version number.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and MUM files (.mum) installed for each environment are listed separately. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files (attributes not listed) are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.

After you apply this hotfix, Windows Server Backup will work only with the system software provider. Windows Server Backup will not work with any vendor-supplied software or hardware providers.
