Mandatory user profiles do not work as expected on Windows Vista-based and Windows Server 2008-based client computers when the %LogonServer% environment variable is set in the profile path

In a domain environment, you configure the domain users to use mandatory user profiles. You set the profile path by using the %LogonServer% environment variable. However, when a user tries to log on to the domain from a Windows Vista-based or Windows Server 2008-based client computer, the user is logged on by using a temporary profile. Additionally, if the Do not log users in with a temporary profile Group Policy setting is applied in the domain, the user cannot log on to the domain.

Note This issue does not occur if the user logs on to the domain from a Windows XP-based or Windows Server 2003-based client computer.

This issue occurs because the User Profile Service does not expand the %LogonServer% environment variable in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. • Windows Vista Service Pack 1(SP1)
• Windows Server 2008

Hotfix file information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

• The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.

• Service Pack 1 is integrated into Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxxx version number.
• The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and MUM files (.mum) installed for each environment are listed separately. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files (attributes not listed) are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
