Error message when you try to use the Encrypting File System wizard to create a self-signed certificate that can be stored in a smart card on a Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computer or on a Windows Server 2008-based computer

Symptoms

On a Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computer or on a Windows Server 2008-based computer, you try to use the Encrypting File System wizard to create a self-signed certificate that can be stored in a smart card. When the wizard reaches the Insert Smart Card page, you see the smart card reader in the list. However, the OK button is unavailable, and the Smart card status field displays the following error message:
The card is being shared by another process. However, the card is not the one being requested, and cannot be used for the current operation.
You cannot go further in the wizard. Therefore, the certificate creation process fails.

Note If this is the first smart card that is used on the computer, this problem does not occur.

Cause

This problem occurs because the Encrypting File System wizard uses only the cryptographic service provider (CSP) that is associated with the first smart card that is listed in the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\Calais\SmartCards
