You cannot create or rename files as expected when you try to use similar file names that differ only in capitalization in an NFS shared directory that was exported from a Windows Server 2003 R2-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based NFS Server

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You export a Network File System (NFS) shared directory from an NFS server that is running Windows Server 2003 R2 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Then, you mount this NFS shared directory on an NFS client. In this directory, you experience one of the following issues:

Issue 1

When you try to create files that have the same file names but are capitalized differently, sometimes, only one file is created successfully.

Issue 2

When you use the mv command to rename a file to the same file name but is capitalized differently, a destination file is generated. However, the source file remains. For example, after you run the mv Test test command, you expect to find that only the file test exists. However, you find that both files, Test and test, exist.

Cause

In the directory cache buffer, the file names that are the same but that are capitalized differently are stored in case-sensitive order. However, when a method searches the file names, the method makes comparisons that are not case-sensitive. Therefore, when the file names differ only in capitalization, the files cannot be created or renamed as expected.

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 R2" section. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
