The repair process for the Setup support files may fail when you try to repair a SQL Server 2008 installation

Symptoms

When you try to repair a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 installation, the repair process for the Setup support files may fail unexpectedly.

Cause

This problem may occur if the SQL Server 2008 Setup support files are missing or damaged.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, use one or more of the following methods.

Method 1: Use the "Add or Remove Programs" item in Control Panel to repair the SQL Server 2008 Setup support files

Windows Server 2008

  1. In Control Panel, open the Programs and Features. To do this, click Start, type appwiz.cplin the Start Search box, and then click appwiz.cpl in the Programs list.
  2. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setup Support Files (English).
  3. Click Repair.

Windows Server 2003

  1. In Control Panel, open the Add or Remove Programs item. To do this, click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setup Support Files (English), and then click Click here for support information.
  3. Click Repair.

Method 2: Use the command prompt to repair the SQL Server 2008 Setup support files

Windows Server 2008

  1. Open a Command Prompt window. To do this, click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
  2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    msiexec /I "SqlSupport.msi" /qb REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=omus
    Note SqlSupport.msi represents the full path of the SqlSupport.msi file in the installation source.

Windows Server 2003

  1. Open a Command Prompt window. To do this, click Start, type cmd, and then click OK.
  2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    msiexec /I "SqlSupport.msi" /qb REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=omus
    Note SqlSupport.msi represents the full path to the SqlSupport.msi file in the installation source.

Method 3: Reinstall the SQL Server 2008 Setup support files

Windows Server 2008

  1. In Control Panel, open the Programs and Features item. To do this, click Start, type appwiz.cplin the Start Search box, and then click appwiz.cpl in the Programs list.
  2. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setup Support Files (English).
  3. Click Uninstall.
  4. In the Drive:\Platform\Setup folder on the SQL Server 2008 DVD, right-click SqlSupport.msi, and then click Install.

    Note Drive represents the assigned drive designation of the DVD drive. Platform represents the processor architecture of the installation. For example, Platform may be x86, x64, or IA-64.

Windows Server 2003

  1. In Control Panel, open the Add or Remove Programs item. To do this, click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setup Support Files (English).
  3. Click Remove.
  4. In the Drive:\Platform\Setup folder on the SQL Server 2008 DVD, right-click SqlSupport.msi, and then click Install.

    Note Drive represents the assigned drive designation of the DVD drive. Platform represents the processor architecture of the installation. For example, Platform may be x86, x64, or IA-64.
