Symptoms

After you install Windows Script 5.7 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP, the Windows Script Host (WSH) binaries may be overwritten by Windows File Protection.

Cause

This issue may occur if the package signature has expired.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, apply the following hotfix. This hotfix installs Windows Script that contains the following components:
  • Visual Basic Script Edition (VBScript.) Version 5.7
  • JScript Version 5.7
  • Windows Script Components
  • Windows Script Host 5.7
  • Windows Script Runtime Version 5.7
New Windows Script 5.7 packages are released for the following products:
  • Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
  • Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2
  • Windows XP Service Pack 2

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
