Fax applications may randomly crash when you use the application to send or receive fax documents on a Windows Server 2008-based or Windows Vista SP1-based computer

Symptoms

A fax application or the Windows Fax and Scan application may randomly crash when you try to send or receive fax documents on a Windows Server 2008-based or Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computer.

When this problem occurs, you may find an event in the Application event log that resembles the following event:

Faulting application WFS.exe or <application name>, version <version number>, time stamp <time stamp>, faulting module WFS.exe or <application name>, version <version number>, time stamp <time stamp>, exception code 0xc0000094, fault offset <offset>, process id <process ID>, application start time <start time>.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

You must have Windows Vista SP1 installed to apply this hotfix. Service Pack 1 is integrated into Windows Server 2008.
