You may experience slow authentication performance on a Windows Server 2008-based RODC when it is under high load or when the link between the RODC and a writable domain controller is slow

Support for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) ends on July 12, 2011. To continue receiving security updates for Windows, make sure you're running Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 (SP2). For more information, refer to this Microsoft web page: Support is ending for some versions of Windows.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows Server 2008-based read-only domain controller (RODC) that has the Netlogon chaining feature enabled.
  • The Windows Server 2008-based RODC is under heavy load. Or, the link between the RODC and the hub domain controller is slow.
In this scenario, Authentication and Directory Services are either slow or these services fail on the RODC. Users may also encounter one of the following symptoms:
  • If a user to logs on to the domain through the RODC, the logon may take a long time.
  • The RODC does not reply, or the RODC replies slowly to Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) requests or to Kerberos version 5 protocol requests from clients.
Additionally, event ID 1173 is logged many times in the Directory Service event log:
Log Name: Directory Service
Source: Microsoft-Windows-ActiveDirectory_DomainService
Event ID: 1173
Task Category: Internal Processing
Level: Warning
Keywords: Classic
Description:
Internal event: Active Directory Domain Services has encountered the following exception and associated parameters.

Exception: e0010004
Parameter: 0

Additional Data

Error value: -1603
Internal ID: 205036b

Cause

This problem occurs because the NetrLogonGetDomainInfo function incorrectly holds some very important sections open when the function performs the chaining call to the writable domain controller. This problem causes a high load on the RODC when the NetLogon chaining feature accesses a slow wide area network (WAN) link.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Prerequisites

You must have Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) installed to apply this hotfix.

Note Service Pack 1 is integrated into Windows Server 2008.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Note The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. MANIFEST and MUM files and the associated security catalog (.cat) files are very important for maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.

Workaround

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
To work around this problem, disable the Netlogon chaining feature. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open Register Editor.
  2. Locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters\EnableChainSetClientAttributes
  3. Set the value of the EnableChainSetClientAttributes registry subkey to 0.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

More Information

In Windows Server 2008, the NetLogon chaining feature enables any client that opens a security channel to the RODC to update the following attributes to the full domain controller through the RODC:
  • operatingSystem
  • operatingSystemVersion
  • operatingSystemServicePack
  • DNSHostname
  • servicePrincipalName
