Known issues with this security update

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 updates do not presume that an instance of SQL Server is intended to be enabled. By design, SQL Server updates do not enable an instance of SQL Server that is in a disabled state. Therefore, SQL Server updates leave the instance of SQL Server in the preupdate configuration state. For a SQL Server update to apply to an instance of SQL Server, the instance must be enabled. For more information about this issue, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

953739 SQL Server 2005 installers do not update an instance of the SQL Server service that is in a disabled state

  • SQL Server 2005 updates that are not completed successfully may leave services that depend on the SQL Server service in a stopped state after installation. You must be aware of the services that depend on the SQL Server service before you install this update. For more information about this issue, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

953741 SQL Server 2005 installers stop dependent services

  • If the SQL Server 2005 installation or the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installation is an upgrade from an earlier version of SQL Server, you may receive the following error message when you try to uninstall SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2005 Express Edition:
1731 The source installation package for the product [2] is out of sync with the client package. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package '[3]'.
