Stop error 0x24 may occur on a computer that has file system filter drivers installed in Windows Server 2003 and in Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

Symptoms

You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. If file system filter drivers are installed on a computer, the operating system may crash. When this problem occurs, you receive the following Stop error message:

Cause

This problem occurs when the file system filter driver uses the ZwQueryInformationFile routine to query the FileAlternateNameInformation class. If the alternate name information of the file that the ZwQueryInformationFile routine queries is not initialized yet, the crash occurs.

Resolution

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
