A Windows Server 2008-based multi-homed DHCP server is not authorized in the DHCP MMC snap-in even though you authorized the DHCP server by using Server Manager

Symptoms

You authorize a Windows Server 2008-based multi-homed Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server when you install the DHCP server role by using Server Manager. However, when you start the DHCP Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, you notice that the multi-homed DHCP server is still not authorized.

Cause

This issue occurs if Server Manager uses an incorrect IP address for the multi-homed DHCP server that is being authorized in Active Directory Domain Services. When a DHCP server contains multiple network adapters and is attached to multiple networks, the IP address that Server Manager uses may be invalid for the domain controller that authorizes the DHCP server. Therefore, Active Directory Domain Services does not recognize the DHCP server when the DHCP server role is installed. Additionally, Server Manager does not prompt you when Active Directory Domain Services does not recognize the DHCP server.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, manually authorize the multi-homed DHCP server in the DHCP MMC snap-in. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open the DHCP MMC snap-in. To do this, click Start, type DHCP in the Start Search box, and then click DHCP.
  2. In the DHCP MMC snap-in, right-click the DHCP server name, and then click Authorize.
  3. To exit the DHCP MMC snap-in, click Exit on the File menu.
