Dynamic updates do not work on the standard primary DNS zone in Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a standard primary (non-Active Directory integrated) Domain Name System (DNS) zone in Windows Server 2008.
  • The zone name matches the primary DNS suffix of the DNS server.
  • You enable dynamic updates on the primary DNS zone.
In this scenario, you notice that the primary DNS zone does not accept dynamic updates until you restart the DNS service.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, restart the DNS server service. To do this, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  2. At the command prompt, type net stop "DNS server".
  3. Type net start "DNS server".

Method 2

  1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
  2. In the list of services, right-click DNS Server, and then click Restart.
