An additional cleanup task remains after you upgrade a server that is running BITS from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008

You upgrade a server from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008. If the server is running Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), you notice that there is one additional cleanup task that is not needed after you perform the upgrade. This additional task does not adversely affect the server. However, it takes more resources to store and to run this task.

Note To upload files, BITS requires Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 on Windows Server 2003 and IIS 7.0 on Windows Server 2008.

This problem occurs when you upgrade BITS settings from IIS 6.0 to IIS 7.0. Task Scheduler upgrades the existing cleanup task and BITS creates another cleanup task during the upgrade. Therefore, after the upgrade, there are two cleanup tasks instead of one.

Note By default, Task Scheduler is set to clean up every 12 hours. This interval can be configured by the administrator.

To resolve this issue, delete one of the duplicate cleanup tasks for each virtual directory.

This behavior is by design.
