Symptoms

You may be unable to install a program that tries to register extensions under the IQueryForm registry entry in Windows Server 2008 or in Windows Vista. Or, the installation may be completed, and the program may not work as expected.

Note A program that will use the IQueryForm interface must register extensions under the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{8A23E65E-31C2-11d0-891C-00A024AB2DBB}\Forms
For more information, visit the following Microsoft Web site: For example, assume that a program tries to register its Class ID for Active Directory Users and Computers search extension. In this case, you receive an "Access Denied" error in the program log.

Note The exact error message that is reported by the program log varies, depending on the specific program.

Cause

This issue occurs because the
Forms
registry key is protected by the Windows Resource Protection (WRP) feature. The Administrators group does not have permissions to modify the
Forms
registry key. By default, only the TrustedInstaller has Full Control permissions to this registry key in Windows Vista and in Windows Server 2008.

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. 3. Locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{8A23E65E-31C2-11d0-891C-00A024AB2DBB}\Forms
  4. Right-click Forms, click Permissions, and then click Advanced.
  5. On the Owner tab, click Administrators (Computer_Name\Administrators), and then click to select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
  6. Click Apply, and then click OK two times.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.
  8. Install the IQueryForm program. Or, if you performed these steps after you installed the program and if the program still does not work, reinstall the program.

More information

The IQueryForm interface is implemented by a query form extension object. This object enables the form object to add forms and pages to the system-supplied query dialog box that can be used to query the Active Directory directory service.
