How to clean up the cluster resource group and the databases on a shared disk after a failed failover Cluster Complete operation in SQL Server 2008

INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to clean up the cluster resource group and the databases on a shared disk after a failed failover Cluster Complete operation in Microsoft SQL Server 2008. After the clean up is completed and the issue that caused the failure is corrected, you can rerun the Complete Failover Cluster setup operation.

 To clean up the cluster resource group and the databases, follow these steps:
  1. Delete the following resources that were created for the SQL Server Failover Cluster instance if they are included in the resource group:
    • SQL IP Address(es)
    • SQL Network Name
    • SQL Server
    • SQL Server Agent
    • Analysis Services
  2. Delete the following database files for the SQL Server Failover Cluster instance:
    • Master.mdf and Mastlog.ldf
    • Model.mdf and Modellog.ldf
    • Msdbdata.mdf and Msdblog.ldf
    • Tempdb.mdf and Templog.ldf
  3. If they are present, delete the following registry keys on all nodes of the cluster that were prepared for the SQL Server Failover Cluster instance:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS10.<InstanceID>\Cluster
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.<InstanceID>\Cluster
    Notes
    • In this step, InstanceID is a placeholder for the instance ID for the SQL Server Failover Cluster instance.
    • Make sure that the Cluster key is deleted on all nodes, not only the node where the Complete Failover Cluster operation was run.
  4. If they are present, change all values under the following registry keys to 2 ("prepared") on all nodes of the cluster that were prepared for the SQL Server Failover Cluster instance:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS10.<InstanceID>\ClusterState
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.<InstanceID>\ClusterState
    Notes
    • In this step, InstanceID is a placeholder for the instance ID for the Failover Cluster instance.
    • Make sure that the ClusterState key values are changed on all nodes, not only the node where the Complete Failover Cluster operation was run.
  5. If they are present, change all values under the following registry keys to 1 ("installed") on all nodes of the cluster that were prepared for the SQL Server Failover Cluster instance:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS10.<InstanceID>\ConfigurationState
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.<InstanceID>\ConfigurationState
    Notes
    • In this step, InstanceID is a placeholder for the instance ID for the Failover Cluster instance.
    • Make sure that the ConfigurationState key values are changed on all nodes, not only the node where the Complete Failover Cluster operation was run.
