Hotfix installation instructions

Note The following steps assume that you are logged in as an administrator.
  1. Install the Automated Installation Kit (AIK) for Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 on a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2008. To obtain the AIK, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Copy the Windows Server 2008 installation DVD to a local drive, such as to F:\DVD, and then copy the hotfix package (Windows6.0-KB952942-platform.msu) into a directory.
  3. Expand the Windows6.0-KB952942-platform.msu package by following these steps:
    1. At a command prompt, switch the current directory to the directory that contains the Windows6.0-KB952942-platform.msu package.
    2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
      Expand f:* Windows6.0-KB952942-platform.msu <extracted location>
Note When you run this command, replace the <extracted location> placeholder with the path of an existing directory in which you want to save the extracted files. A Windows6.0-KB952942-platform.cab file is extracted.
  4. Create an answer file. The answer file is used during the OS installation. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Open Windows System Image Manager (Windows SIM) in elevated administrator mode. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Windows OPK, right-click Windows System Image Manager, and then click Run as administrator.
    2. Click New Answer File from the File menu to create a new answer file.
    3. In the Windows Image pane, locate the Install.wim file in the location in which you copied the installation DVD in step 2. For example, locate F:\DVD\Sources\Install.wim. Select an image such as Enterprise.
    4. On the Insert menu, click Package(s), and then select the Windows6.0-KB952942-platform.cab file that you extracted in step 4.
    5. Click Validate Answer File on the Tool menu, and then save the answer file as "Unattend.xml" in a directory such as F:\Unattend.
  5. Mount the Install.wim image by opening the Windows PE tools command prompt in elevated mode and running the following command:
    imagex /mountrw <WIM image path>\Install.wim X F:\mount
Note Replace the <WIM image path> placeholder with the actual path of the Install.wim file. Replace the X placeholder with the image number. You can run the following command to determine the image number:
    imagex /info <WIM image path>\Install.wim
If you see <IMAGE INDEX="2">, the image number is 2 (1 for Standard Server systems, 2 for Enterprise Server systems, 3 for DataCenter Server systems). The number should correspond to the image you selected in step 5-c. In this command, the image is mounted to F:\mount.

Note If you receive an "access denied" error when you try to mount the image, remove the read-only attribute by using the following command and then mount the image again.
    attrib -r <WIM image path>\Install.wim
  6. Integrate the hotfix package into the mounted image by creating a F:\log folder and then running the following command:
    start /w pkgmgr /o:F:\mount;F:\mount\windows /n:F:\Unattend\Unattend.xml /l:F:\log\logfile.txt
  7. Unmount the image by using the following command:
    imagex /unmount /commit F:\mount
  8. Make a bootable ISO image. For example, you can do this by running the following command in the AIK command window:
    OSCDimg.exe /m /nt /b"C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\<platform>\boot\etfsboot.com" <source> <destination>\x.iso
Note The <platform> placeholder represents the architecture of the operating system to be installed and can be amd64, x86 or ia64. For ia64, the file name is efisys.bin. The <source> placeholder represents the directory to which you copied the installation DVD, such as F:\DVD.
  9. Burn the .iso file to a DVD by using a burning application.
  10. Perform operating system installation by using the new DVD.
