Stop error when Windows Server 2003-based server restarts unexpectedly: "Stop error code 0x00000050 (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA)"

A Windows-based computer may restart unexpectedly. Additionally, you may receive the following Stop error message: This issue occurs when the computer is running one of the following operating systems:

• Windows Server 2003
• Windows Vista
• Windows Vista Service Pack 1
• Windows Server 2008

Notes

• The parameters in this Stop error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
• Not all "0x00000050" Stop error messages are caused by this problem.

The issue may occur when an application calls the NtGdiRectInRegion function in Windows Server 2003. For example, this error may occur when you try to start an Office application in a terminal services session. The Windows Server 2003-based terminal server may restart unexpectedly.

The issue occurs because the NtGdiRectInRegion function checks the wall beyond the boundary.
