On a computer that is running an Itanium-based version of Windows Server 2008, the Ftp.exe utility crashes when you run the "mput" command

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have computer that is running an Itanium-based version of Windows Server 2008.
  • You run the mput command in the Ftp.exe utility.
  • The first argument of the mput command does not match any file name.
In this scenario, the Ftp.exe utility crashes.

Note The issue does not occur if the first argument of the mput command matches a file name.

Cause

This problem occurs because the Ftp.exe utility uses the UNICODE version of the wprintf function. The wprintf function treats the %s format as a UNICODE (WCHAR*) string. However, the ftp!mput function accepts the char* string as input. Then, the ftp!mput function calls the wprintf function by using the "%s%ws" format string to print one single-byte string (the file name) and one UNICODE string (the error message).

Because the file name is an ANSI string, the name is not aligned correctly. This triggers a misalignment exception in Itanium-based versions of Windows Server 2008.
