Error message when the Mshtml.dll component causes Internet Explorer 6 to exit unexpectedly in Windows XP SP2 or in Windows Server 2003: "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Symptoms

On a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2003, you have installed the latest update. When you use Internet Explorer 6 on this computer, the Mshtml.dll component may cause Internet Explorer 6 to exit unexpectedly (crash).

When this problem occurs, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
