Firewall service stops responding intermittently in ISA Server 2006

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

The Microsoft Firewall service stops responding intermittently to client requests on a computer that is running Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2006.

Cause

ISA Server 2006 uses the Routing and Remote Access service (RRAS) for virtual private network (VPN) connections. If RRAS stops responding, some RPC calls from the ISA Server may fail and cause the Web and firewall services to stop responding.

Typically, this issue occurs when you use on-board Broadcom NetExtreme Server adapters.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use individual network adapters instead of on-board network adapters.
