Error message when you try to upgrade Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008: "Setup has detected that FrontPage server extensions is installed on this computer To upgrade your server, uninstall this component"


Symptoms

When you try to upgrade from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008, you may receive the following error message:

Setup has detected that FrontPage server extensions is installed on this computer. To upgrade your server, uninstall this component.

Cause

The upgrade stops if the Microsoft FrontPage server extensions are already installed in Windows Server 2003.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, uninstall the FrontPage server extensions, perform the upgrade, and then reinstall the FrontPage server extensions. To do this, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Use the Add or Remove Programs item in Control Panel

  1. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  2. Click the FrontPage server extensions entry.
  3. Click Remove.
  4. Perform the upgrade.
  5. Reinstall the FrontPage server extensions if it is necessary.

Method 2: Modify the registry

  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\5.0\Setup Packages "Microsoft Windows" ="<x.x.x.xxxx>"
    Note In this registry subkey, <x.x.x.xxxx> represents a version number.
  3. On the File menu, click Delete, and then click Yes to accept the deletion.
  4. Perform the upgrade.
  5. Reinstall the FrontPage server extensions if it is necessary. If the FrontPage server extensions are not installed, the extensions may be installed as part of another program.
